(DVD, Running Time: 32:30 minutes.)
Getting it Right takes a unique (and effective)
approach to the subject matter of disability etiquette. It portrays a group of
employees who are (somewhat reluctantly) attending a diversity training session
that focuses on disability awareness. The diversity trainer presents them (and
the viewing audience) with a solid and thoughtful overview of disability rights,
people-first language, and more general issues of disability etiquette.
Scenarios
In the film, the diversity trainer shows six video clips
that focus more specifically on some commonly-encountered forms of disability.
Each of these includes a brief scenario which is then analyzed and explained by
the narrator to point out correct and/or incorrect interactions evident in the
clip. The disabilities covered in these modules are:
-
Mobility
-
Deafness
-
Blindness
-
Psychiatric
-
Speech
-
Prosthetics
(Should it be required, each of the disability- specific
segments can be selected and played independently from the other modules in the
video.)
Following these modules, the diversity trainer engages
in a lively question & answer session with the employees.
This is a smartly-done video. It moves at a nice pace
and its novel approach to the disability “scenarios” is a refreshing departure
from the norm.
Applications
Getting It Right is a nice upbeat tool for Diversity
Managers, Job Developers or anyone else intending to conduct disability
awareness training in a workplace.
Accessibility
Close captioned. Includes version with Spanish
subtitles.

Diversity World Comment: While some of the humor/jokes in
this video fall a little flat and the ongoing co-worker banter may be
somewhat annoying or distracting, this is nevertheless a very lively and
entertaining little video. It can also readily be shown to non-U.S.
audiences as there are few U.S.-specific (e.g. the ADA) references.
